This guide provides concise information about candidates in the governor and attorney general races, the candidates in the odd-numbered state senate races and all 100 house races.
For incumbent candidates, roll call voting records are provided for two recent bills that Iowans for Gun Safety believes are good indicators of candidates’ interest in preventing gun violence. The two bills are HF 2586, which empowered school districts to allow armed teachers in schools, and SJR 7, which lowered the age for purchasing hand guns from 21 to 18.
The voter guide also shows Yes or No responses to a brief survey sent to all gubernatorial, state senate, and state house candidates. We asked if the candidate would support a “red flag” law that would allow the temporary removal of firearms from a person thought to be considering harming self or others, and if the candidate would support a bill that would ban the sale of military-style, high capacity firearms in the state.
Finally, we included grades or endorsements for each candidate, where available, from Moms Demand Action “Gun Sense Candidate” list and also from National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund candidate grading system.
